EVA, rubber and PVC move with oil and polymer markets, and footwear buyers feel it twice: once in the FOB price and once in the freight surcharge that nobody quoted. Between 2021 and 2024 the swing in EVA compound prices was wide enough to wipe out the margin on a low-price program, and the buyers who survived it were the ones who had planned for the swing rather than argued about it after the fact.
What actually moves your cost
For EVA-moulded styles — slippers, clogs, garden shoes — the compound is the single largest material cost, often 35 to 45 percent of the FOB. Rubber outsole styles carry less exposure on the upper and more on the outsole compound and the adhesive. PU and synthetic leather uppers track different inputs again, so a range that mixes EVA, rubber and PU does not move as one block.
This is why a quote for a mixed range can be re-priced style by style while a quote for a single-material program cannot. Ask a supplier how their price breaks down before you ask for a discount — a supplier who cannot show the breakdown is quoting a market price, not a cost.
Quote validity is the first protection
Our quotes run 15 days on EVA and PVC styles and 30 days on rubber-soled and PU styles, which reflects how far forward we can hedge material. If you need a longer validity, ask for it before you compare prices, because a 90-day quote is usually a 90-day quote with a re-pricing clause hidden in the terms.
Read the clause. The honest versions say 'material price adjustment applies above a 5 percent movement in the published index, applied to the material share of the FOB only'. The dishonest version says 'prices subject to change without notice', which means your landed cost is unknown until the invoice arrives.
Three practical hedges
- Split the order across two production windows. Half now, half next quarter, with both prices fixed at signing. You give up a small quantity discount and buy protection against a spike.
- Fix only the material-heavy styles. If your range is eight styles, the two EVA-heavy ones carry most of the risk; negotiate fixed pricing on those and floating on the rest.
- Commit early on the volume you are sure of. Material is bought against confirmed orders, so an early confirmation at a lower price beats a late confirmation at spot.
Watch the second-order effect
When compound prices rise, factories shorten working hours on unprofitable lines and lengthen lead times on the profitable ones. That is why a price spike in March shows up as a delivery delay in June. If you are running a seasonal program, the delivery risk matters more than the five-cent price difference — build two to three weeks of buffer into your sailing date and confirm production slots in writing.
Our sports and functional range is the most material-sensitive part of the catalogue because of the rubber and foam content; the casual range is the most stable. If you are placing a test order during a volatile quarter, starting with the more stable styles reduces the chance that your first landed cost becomes your worst landed cost.
Currency is the other half
Most Chinese footwear exports are quoted in USD while raw materials are bought in RMB. When the exchange rate moves, the supplier's cost moves with it, and the buyer who has not discussed currency is the buyer who absorbs an unplanned re-quote. Agree the currency and the reference rate at the quoting stage, even if you do not hedge.
FAQ
How long is a quotation valid?
15 days for EVA and PVC styles, 30 days for rubber-soled, PU and multi-material styles. Longer validity is possible with a material index clause, which is normally the better arrangement for a seasonal program.
Can the price be locked for a full season?
Yes, on confirmed volume with a deposit. We fix the material share at signing and hold it for the production window agreed in the contract. We do not lock prices on unconfirmed quantities, because the material has to be bought to be hedged.
Should we split a large order to reduce risk?
Usually yes, if the styles are EVA-heavy and the season is long. Splitting costs a small quantity discount and buys certainty on half the volume. Discuss it with us before the proforma invoice, since the production slot is easier to split at that stage than afterwards.
